Indian Culture


India is a culturally rich country that has developed its culture from its intriguing history and diverse topography. This country is the birthplace of many famous religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. It also took and adopted many religions from its invaders or travelers like, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Bahai faith. India has a majority of Hindus accounting for around 80% of the population and it has 13% of its population practicing Islam, and the rest of its population is an assortment of various religions that are prevalent here. This country with a unique feeling of being united under the cover of vast diversity in culture has myriad colors that give essence to this country.

The culture in India is also affected by the topography and circumstances in which the people of India in different regions lived in. This resulted in different types of beliefs, cuisines, arts, clothing and practices in different regions of the land.

Clothing in IndiaClothing in India: Clothing is an important part of every culture, but nowhere in the world can it have so diverse styles, as it has in India. People in almost every region in India have different ways of clothing. They might have a lot of similarities but the uniqueness in the dressing style of each part of the country is evident. The traditional dress in most of the parts of the country is saree for women, dhoti and kurta for men, but with increasing western influences the dressing style in many part, mainly the cities and major town has seen immense changes. Now men wear trousers and shirt and women are also seen wearing trousers, shirts, skirts, etc.

Festivals in India: In India, people with varied religious beliefs celebrate many festivals. Some of the main Hindu festivals in India are Diwali, Holi, Dussehra, Durga Puja, Ganesh Chatturthi, etc, and main Muslim festivals are Eid-ul-fitr, Ramdan, etc Many other festivals and fairs are celebrated in different parts of the country.

Indian food: India has different eating practices prevalent in different regions of the country. The cuisines in all the parts mainly Indian fooddepend on the past circumstances and availability of ingredients in those regions. Like in Rajasthan mainly those dishes were made that could be eaten even after many days, as people had to make long journeys for their living, in the past. They also used to make food by using minimal amount of water as the desert areas always had a dearth of water bodies and sources. In states near the coastline, like Kerala, Goa, etc have seafood as major component of their diet because of easily availability of fish and other seafood. In Northeast region people have rice as their staple diet because of the soil there that supported growing of rice rather than wheat.

Art in IndiaArt in India: India has various forms of performing and visual art forms prevalent in the country. Performing arts include music, dance and drama, etc and some of the famous art forms in this category are Kathakali, Bharatnatyam, etc. Visual art includes paintings, sculptures and architecture, like Madhubani paintings, architecture of various palaces and monuments, etc. are also very famous here.
