Indian Visa Information


All the foreign tourists except the nationals of Bhutan and Nepal have to show a visa card while entering in India. It is either a preset text or a stamp affixed by the Indian embassy or the Indian consular office in the concerned country, on a page in the passport of the person travelling to India. Certain rules and regulations are set regarding the issuance of Visa to nationals of different countries. Like People from Maldives are allowed to stay in India up to three months without visa. General tourist visa is usually granted for three to six months. Visas for different time period attracts different fees. A visa that is valid up to six months costs $40, and that up to one year costs $65 and the one from one up to five years cost $180. These prices are subject to change.

Following is the information about different types of individual visas that are available in India:

Individual Visas

  • Tourist Visa - In India, tourist visa is granted for 180 days and it allows multiple entries within that time period. This type of Visa is not extendable in India.
  • Transit Visa – In India, transit visa is granted for 15 days and it allows only one entry into the country. For applying for this kind of visa, you have to provide with return and onward journey ticket with the application. It is not extendable in India.
  • Business Visa – This visa is usually granted for one to five year period. It allows for multiple entries in India within the granted visa period. With application, one must furnish authentic proof of purpose of travel to India. This visa is extendable in India through proper application.
  • Employment Visa – In India, this visa is granted for one year or the period of contract. This allows for multiple entries in the country and asks for appointment documents for skilled or high post employment. The terms and conditions of law of company are applicable. This visa can be extended in India.
  • Student Visa - This visa is issued for the period of the course. It allows for multiple entries in the country. One is require to submit proof of admission in an Indian institution, and this visa is extendable in India.
  • Foreigners of Indian origin Visa– This visa is issued for one to five years period, and it allows for multiple entries in the country. With the application, one must submit a proof of being of Indian origin. This visa is extendable in India.

Collective Visas

Besides Individual visas, collective visas are also granted to travelers travelling to India. These visas are granted for at least four people travelling to India through a renowned travel agent. Following requirement and documents should be completed to get this visa:
  • Three days before departure, the documents and particulars of all the individuals in the group must be submitted in four copies with the Indian Mission.
  • The Indian Mission returns three copies of the particulars to the travel agency after careful evaluation and stamping.
  • On arrival at India, the leading person of the group hands over two copies of the list to the Colonization authority.
  • The immigration authority must be presented with the list of tourists by the Indian agent, four hours before arrival.
  • In the case, when the group of tourist is splitting on arrival then a collective ‘license to travel’ is obtained. This allows sub groups to travel different sections of India separately.

Visa Provision

Certain visa provisions are there if the visa exceeds the 180 days limit. The registration becomes essential, 14 days before your arrival to India. Visa will be given for up to five years if the tourist is part of the tourism trade.
