Clothing to wear in India


When you are travelling to India, it is advisable to carry basic clothing and carry a lightweight bag. Do not stuff your bag with unnecessary clothing. There is not a particular dress code in India, so there is no hard and fast rule regarding dressing up in India. You require different types of clothes in different seasons. It is suggested to wear clothes that cover you decently enough, as not to attract unwanted attention.

In summer, the weather is hot, so pack light clothes, but avoid wearing synthetic clothes as it may cause heat burn or allergy. Cotton is the right fabric for the summers.

In winters, carry warm clothes, as in winters weather gets very cold, especially in Northern India.

For comfortable travelling, jeans and full sleeves shirt or t-shirt are enough. It is suggested to wear full sleeves because it provides protection against suntan in the morning, and it protects from mosquito bites at night. It would be good to carry sturdy shoes, as you may trek at some places . Flat footwear would do fine, and avoid wearing very high heels.

It is advisable to avoid wearing shorts, tank top and exposing clothes at most of the places in India, as it may offend some Indian customs. One can wear sleeveless shirts if they are decent, and it is suggested to carry a scarf or a stole to cover your head to avoid heat in the daytime. At temples and other religious places, it is compulsory to cover your head; hence, the scarf may come handy.

Indian ClothingIf you wish to dress up in Tradition Indian style then you can wear a knee length ‘Kurta’ with a pair of jeans or Indian cotton pants called ‘pyjamas’. This ‘Kurta pyjama’ worn by Indian women, is also called ‘Salwar kameez’.

Men can also wear ‘Kurta Pyjama’ that is stitched in a different style than women’s wear.

You can easily buy such Indian clothes from many shops and marts in different places.
